A 17-day-old baby girl who was the youngest person diagnosed with the novel coronavirus recovered without the help of medication.
According to the report from the state media, the baby was sent home from the Wuhan Children’s Hospital on Friday after receiving negative in three consecutive tests.
The director of the Department of Neonatology of Wuhan Children’s Hospital Dr Zeng Lingkong said that the baby, named Xiao Xiao, was transferred to the hospital the same day she was born after the doctors found a minor myocardial damage and respiratory infection.
It is there when they found out that the novel coronavirus infected her as well.
Since baby Xiao Xiao was asymptomatic, the doctors decided to let her overcome the disease on her own, instead of giving her medications.
Dr. Zeng said in an interview, “She did not have obvious difficulties in breathing, did not cough or have fevers, therefore we only gave her treatment for her myocardial condition.”
He said that baby Xiao Xiao has not only fully recovered from coronavirus, she recovered from her heart disease as well.
Because of what happened, doctors in China suspect that it is possible for the infection to be passed from mothers to their babies in the womb.
The baby was born from a coronavirus patient, and was diagnosed to be carrying the disease hours after her birth.
By that time, Dr. Zeng said, “This reminds us to pay attention to a potential new transmission route of the coronavirus – vertical transmission from mothers to babies.”
China’s oldest patient is a 96-year-old woman who also recovered from the infection after being in the intensive care unit for three days.
As of February 24, there are 77,150 confirmed cases in the country, with 2,592 confirmed deaths.
