After nearly three decades, Disney finally announced that Sister Act 3 is in development, and the franchise’s original star Whoopi Godlberg will be returning for the sequel.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production boss Sean Bailey confirmed the news on Thursday through the virtual Disney Investor Day presentation.
The Oscar winner and bonafide Master of Culture Goldberg will reprise her role as lovable Deloris Wilson, the lounge singer-turned-nun via witness protection.
She will also be producing the film alongside Good Deeds actor and director Tyler Perry, who will also direct the film.
Insecure co-EP Regina Hicks and then Star showrunner Karin Gist was revealed to have started working on a script for a new Sister Act since 2018.
The first Sister Act film reaped heavenly rewards at the box office upon its release back in 1992, grossing more than $230 million worldwide.
A less successful sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, was released the following year, in which original casts Maggie Smith and Kathy Najimy reprised their roles alongside Goldberg.
In 2011, a Sister Act musical had hit Broadway.
The much-awaited sequel will debut on Disney+, as well as a sequel to Enchanted and prequel to Toy Story, and confirmed a sequel to Hocus Pocus.
People took to social media the express their excitement surrounding Sister Act 3 and Goldberg’s return.
“About damn time. Musical, hip nuns always make the dark times better,’ one person wrote.
Another user, who was enthusiastic with the news, wrote, “there is going to be a sister act 3. I repeat, there is going to be a sister act 3. Teacher says take off your motherf*cking robes!!!!!”
A release is yet to be given for the film.
