A 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman was arrested over the death of a one-year-old boy, who suffered from a serious head injury that lead to the poor toddler’s untimely death.
On January 6, Leiland Corkill was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool with a severe head injury, but he died the next day.
The suspects were charged on suspicion of murder, assault, ill-treatment and neglect, but have been released on bail.
“Two people have been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into the tragic death of a one-year-old boy in Barrow,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Dean Holden.
“An investigation is underway by a dedicated team of detectives and other specialists in order to establish the full circumstances of the death in full consultation with the Coroner.”
The one-year-old was last seen happy, healthy, and laughing with his biological mother Laura Corkill.
He was taken out of his mother’s care 48 hours after his birth, but she regularly visited him before he was put up for adoption.
He was still under the care of Cumbria council at the time of his death, but was living with a couple who were hoping to adopt him.
Both his mother and grandmother were by his side in hospital before Leiland succumbed to his injuries.
“It’s horrible. He was a happy, cheerful little boy and we can’t believe what’s happened,” said the boy’s grandmother Yvonne Corkill.
“I was there when he was born and I was there at the end. I can’t believe the two were just a year apart. It’s too much to bear.”
“I don’t need to be constantly reminded of my bad choices from my past experience,” Laura wrote on a Facebook post.
“I will live with them for the rest of my days.”
An inquest into Leiland’s death was adjourned on January 26, and his body was buried in their home town in Whitehaven, Cumbria.
