Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, had received thousands of online abuse after the release of The Crown’s season four, following the show’s depiction of their relationship during his marriage to the late Princess Diana.
The latest season of the hit Netflix royal drama suggested that Charles had affair with Camilla while married to Diana.
In reality, however, the pair had little contact for five years after Charles and Diana wed in 1981.
On Instagram, a photo posted Camilla’s official page last Friday received more than 4,000 comments – mostly from vicious supporters of Princess Diana.
One user called Camilla a “horrible woman profiting off the heartbreak of another woman”.
“You tortured Diana from the moment she was engaged to your precious Charles,” said another.
The Duchess’ Twitter account wasn’t spared from the vile abuse.
One troll ranted, “Hope Lady Diana, PEOPLE’S PRINCESS is in a happier place, cause you guys sure made her life hell on earth. Shame.”
“The true princess of wales, always Diana, Camilla, the eternal lover. The greatness of Diana will be eternal, no one will be able to take her place. Charles of England will never be King and neither deserves it. Diana Princess of Wales will live forever,” said another furious troll.
Some have come to defend the couple by reminding everyone that the pair had always been in love and had moved past the issues portrayed in the series.
“The fact is, Camilla does a great job, the boys are cool with it, Charles was forced into that marriage (as you get your education from Netflix, you should know that) and Diana was not a lamb herself. So calm down and get over it,” said one follower.
Both Netflix and the couple had not made a comment on the issue, but a source says that Charles is believed to be furious with his and Camilla’s depiction on The Crown.
“This is drama and entertainment for commercial ends. Being made with no regard to the actual people involved who are having their lives hijacked and exploited,” the source said.
