Atlanta police officer fatally shot a black man at Wendy’s restaurant while responding to a call about someone sleeping in a car Friday.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation report that Rayshard Brooks, 27, resisted arrest and struggled for an officer’s Taser after failing sobriety test.
Two officers responded to a report Friday night, which says that a man was sleeping in his car, which was parked in a Wendy’s restaurant drive-thru.
They then found Brooks in the vehicle, prompted to give him a field sobriety test, failed, and resisted when the officers attempted to arrest him.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Nelly Miles said in a statement, “After failing the test, the officers attempted to place the male subject into custody. During the arrest, the male subject resisted and a struggle ensued. The officer deployed a Taser.”
According to the witnesses, an officer drew his Taser that Brooks grabbed, before an officer shot him.
Brooks was later pronounced dead after being brought to a nearby hospital, while one officer was treated for an injury and released.
Videos circulated on social media however, show Brooks running away from police before being shot off-screen.
GBI said on Twitter, “The GBI is aware that there is video posted on social media captured by witnesses in this incident. We are reviewing the video & the early investigative information in this case. We’ll provide an update as soon as we can.”
This news comes after the death of George Floyd last month in Minneapolis parked global protests and discussions of racism and use of force by the police, including some, which turned violent.
During one of the said violent protests, six Atlanta Police Department officers were charged for using excessive force, where Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms fired two of the officers.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard released a statement that said, “My office has already launched an intense, independent investigation of the incident.”
“Members of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office were on scene shortly after the shooting, and we have been in investigative sessions ever since to identify all of the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident,” he added.
