Oprah Winfrey made a shocking revelation that she didn’t use to “care” about the answers when she asked her celebrity guests questions on her iconic talk show – which ran from 1986 until 2011.
The 67-year-old was in the middle of a chat with fellow talk show host Ellen DeGeneres when she made the confession.
Ellen personally picked Oprah to discuss what it was like to end a talk show after the news that ‘The Ellen Show’ will end after 19 seasons.
When asked about what she would regret the most about the show ending, Oprah said: “I think the camaraderie, how you’ve changed people’s lives and the people on your staff”.
“You will still have those relationships but what I missed the most was the audience,” Oprah explained. “And I don’t mean just audience applause but I always felt like I was a surrogate viewer and that I was there representing the audience.”
But then Oprah suddenly admits that there were times where she didn’t actually care about the celebrity guests she had on the show.
“So many times I would ask questions, particularly of celebrities that I didn’t care about the answer,” she said. “But I was the stand-in, the surrogate for the audience, so I really missed the camaraderie with the audience.”
“Because as you know, after each show I’d sit and I’d talk with the audience and that’s where a lot of our ideas came from,” Oprah continued. “I missed that, I missed the being able to talk to people about what was going on in their lives en masse that way.”
When Ellen asked about what she hated the most on her show, Oprah said: “I’ll tell you what I didn’t miss and I knew it was coming to the end”.
“We were doing a makeover, and we did a lot of makeovers over the years, and I just thought there’s not another way I can ask somebody what mascara are you wearing,” Oprah said. “There’s not another way I can say ‘What color is that eyeshadow?’”
“There wasn’t another way I could do that and be honest, be authentic with myself,” Oprah said. “And I thought, yeah, time to start thinking about moving in another direction”.
