A North Carolina mum broke down in tears recently after she revealed how she couldn’t pay for her son’s insulin prescription.
Katie Schieffer’s son was only recently diagnosed by medical experts as having Type I Diabetes. And for that reason, the only solution to the problem was injecting insulin, every two hours. The heartbroken mum shared a TikTok video recently, where she stands outside a pharmacy and sobs her sorrows away.
After seeing how much the insulin prescription cost, she just couldn’t keep it together. Moreover, she mentions how she simply ‘couldn’t pay for it’ and now has to go and tell her young 9-year-old the terrifying truth.
Katie is a working mum who works three shifts to make ends meet. In the same way, her husband does the same. However, now, they’re finding it hard to pay for the cost of their’s son’s medications for diabetes.
After going viral, plenty of people started commenting on how devastating the US healthcare system really is. Many social media viewers complained about how this nightmare shouldn’t ever be a reality for any parent in today’s time. They also revealed how it isn’t like that in most developed nations of the world.
Katie filmed herself walking empty-handed from outside the pharmacy, just a day before Christmas. And that made things even more emotional for her. “I have worked hard for almost 17 years,” she mentioned. Since her child was born, she claims that she spends every bit of her money on her child.
With a red face and swollen eyes, she simply can’t put an end to those tears. Finally, the heartbroken mum asks viewers how they keep up with the ever-rising costs of commodities. “How are you making it? Am I the only one struggling?”
Katie also revealed in the clip how she works a full-time job, including a third shift. In the day, she works at a school too. While many people felt bad for the poor mum, they couldn’t hold their peace when it came to criticizing the nation’s health sector.
One commenter went as far as mentioning how citizens from one of the richest nations of the world can’t even afford Insulin. So far, several people did reach out to assist the mum via Paypal and Venmo to help.
