In Ghana, a single mother has been jailed for 90 days after posing naked with her son on his seventh birthday.
Mother and Ghanian actress Akuapem Poloo, 31, was found guilty of producing “obscene material” when she shared a naked photo of hers with her son on social media last year.
Poloo was arrested and charged with “domestic violence that undermines another person’s privacy or could harm someone’s dignity and self-worth”.
In the ‘obscene’ photo, Poloo’s body was covered by her long hair, while her 7-year-old son was shirtless and only wears underwear.
Judge Christiana Cann presided over the case in Accra and compared it to child abuse, adding that “obscene materials” are increasing in Ghana.
“The court is bothered with posting nude photos on social media,” Judge Cann said. “Did she ask for the permission of the child before posting the said picture? Did she respect the child’s rights? No, she did not.”
“There is no doubt that apart from the canker of rape, defilement, physical assault, the publication of obscene materials is on the increase,” the judge said.
Judge Cann explained that she considered Poloo’s guilty plea, that she is a single mother and her remorse in posting the offensive picture.
However, the judge said that ‘a harsh sentence will serve as a deterrent.’
Attorney Andy Vortia, Poloo’s defense lawyer said that he would appeal to the judge.
Poloo’s case sparked anger and went viral on social media, claiming that the sentence was too harsh. One of them was rapper Cardi B.
“I seen a lot of Americans do photoshoots like that,” Cardi B tweeted. “Even tho is not my style I don’t think she was going for sexual more going the natural idea.”
“I think jail is a bit harsh,” she tweeted. “Maybe social media probation or community service.”
Many people on Twitter called for Poloo to be released with the hashtag #FreeAkuapemPoloo.
