Earlier this week, images and videos of naked women were widely shared across social media and shocked the Emirates.
The Dubai police arrested at least 11 Ukrainian women who posed naked in broad daylight and a male Russian photographer for producing pornography and public debauchery.
Authorities have confirmed that the people involved will not be imprisoned despite violating a legal code that normally landed foreigners in jail.
Dubai’s Attorney General Essam Issa al-Humaidan announced that instead of facing a prison sentence, those arrested would be deported to their home countries without further elaboration.
Despite the clear video that spread on social media, the Dubai police declined to officially identify those detained.
Russian and Ukrainian authorities confirmed the arrest of their people on Tuesday, but the nationalities of the others that were arrested were not immediately known.
Immediate deportation is considered rare for the legal system in Dubai as such cases usually go to trial or adjudicated before deportation.
“The public prosecutor ordered the deportation of the accused of their behavior contrary to public morals,” al-Humaidan said.
Dubai is a favorite tourist destination especially for Instagram models and influencers alike. They mostly fill their social media feeds with bikini selfies from the city’s luxury hotels and artificial islands.
The photoshoot scandal happened a few days before Ramadan— the holiest month of the Muslim calendar — and as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed in nearby Doha, Qatar, for an official state visit.
