A girl who was missing for six months was found dead, and her family is trying to find meaning in the tragedy.
Alezauna Carter, affectionately called Libby by her friends and family, was reported missing in October last year.
While police officers have a picture of a suspect, no arrests have been made yet up to this date.
“She was a strong girl, but she didn’t deserve this,” Libby’s mom, Trisha, said.
12-year-old Libby was last seen on the morning of October 12, 2020, in Southwest Philadelphia. A week after she vanished, the Philadelphia Police Department requested the public’s help in finding her.
Six months later, on April 18, the police found a dead body in an apartment in Frankford, about 17 miles away from the place where Libby reportedly went missing.
The police said that the body belonged to a girl who was shot in the mouth and died. Two weeks later, they notified the Carter family and confirmed that it was Libby’s body.
Libby’s family described her as a happy girl who found passion in dancing and makes TikTok videos.
“We all tried to look for her and keep her safe,” Trisha said. “Every day was looking out for this child.”
During the vigil to commemorate Libby’s death, her friends and family released orange balloons in the sky.
“We don’t know what happened, but we are going to find out,” Libby’s aunt said.
The day after authorities discovered Libby’s murder, the police released a photo of a suspect. However, there are no arrests made.
