The unnamed man, who was dubbed as “Forrest Gump” on social media, walked from Como, Italy and was stopped by the police in Fano on the Adriatic coast at 2am.

“I came here on foot, I didn’t use any transport,” the man told police.

“Along the way I met people who offered me food and drink. I’m OK, just a bit tired.”

Authorities found him wandering aimlessly and cold at night on a coastal highway, and picked him up for breaching Italy’s lockdown curfew.

While they did not believe his story at first, the authorities had confirmed that his wife had indeed reported him as missing back in Como a week earlier.

Walking an average of 50 miles per day, the man was provided with lodging at a nearby hotel until his wife could make a trip to pick him up.

However, the wife was told to pay €400 in his husband’s behalf as fine for breaching the Covid overnight curfew, on top of the overnight hotel bill.

Comments on social media slammed the fine and praised the man, calling him heroic.

One of the comments suggested the man should have been rewarded, and must be given a new pair of shoes.

Another praised his act for walking off to calm down after having a row with his wife, rather than resorting to violence.
