28-Year-Old Man Dies After Police Enforce ‘300 Squats’ As Punishment For Breaking COVID Rules


A 28-year-old man has died in the Philippines capital of Manila recently after being forced to do 300 squats as punishment.

According to local media reports, officers punished the man for breaking the city’s COVID-19 rules and hence forced him and others to embark upon a grueling exercise routine. The man was identified as Darren Manaog Penareedondo who police detained over the offense.

The incident took place on Thursday in the vicinity of General Trias which is a Manilla-based suburb. Some reports claim that the man’s only mistake was violating the curfew timings as the country struggles to keep COVID-19 infections at bay in the Southeastern country. Therefore, the country is now resorting to unique as well as harsh tactics that enforce all of the restrictions, mentioned by the rights groups.

While the man was reportedly released the next day of the violations, police informed him that he would first have to fulfill the punishment that comprised of around 300 squats, as confirmed by his relatives.

But he didn’t know that those exercises would actually kill him, leaving loved ones grieving in absolute terror and shock.

Mr Penaredondo’s relatives confirmed how he returned back home in an extremely fatigued state. He was so exhausted that he couldn’t even walk, after reaching his home. And when he went to relieve himself, he was blue and had undergone convulsions.

While medics attempted to revive him, he passed away tragically.
