South Africa’s hit reality television show ‘Love Island’ is under fire after casting a nearly all-white guest star list for the season.
With a country that has an 80% population comprising of Blacks, the news left many stunned and baffled beyond belief at the same time. Now, people are calling the show out for showing a lack of diversity in a modern era like today.
Many feel the show isn’t sticking to its roots and is more or less portraying something that majorly comprises of all-white contestants.
Just yesterday, the hit show was launched as a South African version on M-Net with fans and followers going wild over the news. Some critics went as far as labeling it as a shockingly embarrassing debut. The show is however currently unavailable for viewers in the UK.
Thankfully, there is only one black contestant amongst a sea of white-skinned players and that is 26-year-old Thimna Shooto from Mossel Bay.
Love Island viewers on social media were very quick to pinpoint the show’s lack of diversity which predominately focused on casting all-white stars. And on that note, the battle of typing brigades was on with comments flushing in from all directions.
One person expressed their thoughts on the matter by saying, “Love Island South Africa is adding just ONE Black woman for the sake of diversity and it’s just disgusting.”
Another mentioned how the makers of the show may have forgotten that this is South Africa that houses a population that comprises 80% blacks. Moreover, they went on to mention how the makers of the show shouldn’t be playing such games as no one has time for that.
In the same way, another Twitter user wrote, “Love Island SA is going mad for having mostly WHITE CAST IN SOUTH AFRICA.” And just like that, the bashing against the show continued with many notable social media influencers also opposing the show’s decision on casting.
