In one of the most baffling ordeals ever, a shocking new Victorian law permits the throwing of rape victims and sexual assault survivors into jail for speaking up.
According to reports, the shocking law is getting famous as a ‘major victory’ for all pedophiles.
Furthermore, news agencies claim how the victims could face up to four long months in jail. This includes slapping of fines that exceed $3000. The punishment will be in light of the victims coming forward with their stories, using their actual names.
The shocking ordeal is a part of the Victorian Judicial Proceedings Reports Act that was altered this past February.
Moreover, the new changes were silently given the green signal by a Supreme court in Victoria, Australia.
According to the new law, victims are prohibited from revealing their true identities in public. And that’s especially true if the attacker is guilty of the crime.Similarly, the law also applies in a retrospective manner. And that means any victims who spoke out against their accused, are now barred or censored from doing so. At the same time, any media outlets who defy this particular law can also face prosecution, alongside fines of up to $8000.
Therefore, the only way out for victims to actually come forward with their case is via a court order. And that means an added hassle to an already time-consuming process. Likewise, it’s an added expense that can cost victims more than $10,000 for legal fees only.
A famous lecturer at the Swinburne Law School, Dr, Rachael Burgin, described the new as a ‘huge victory for rapists as well as pedophiles.’ Similarly, she went on to explain how it will hinder thousands of survivors from coming forward with the harrowing truth of their stories.
On the other hand, the new law prevents victims from using their real identities. Furthermore, it also prohibits them from revealing any identifying features. This includes images for publications, autobiographies, as well as memoirs. In cases where they wish to do so, they will require a court order.
