The mother of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old charged with fatally shooting two protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, received a standing ovation while attending a Wisconsin GOP event on Thursday.
Wendy Rittenhouse and her son’s lawyer, John Pierce, went to an event hosted by The Republican Women of Waukesha County in Pewaukee, and was brought to the stage by conservative commentator and blogger Michelle Malkin.
“Standing ovation from Waukesha County GOP women for my special guests, @CaliKidJMP & Wendy Rittenhouse, Kyle’s mom,” wrote Malkin on Twitter.
“Huge shoutout sent from all of us in WI to warrior @LLinWood. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone & THANK HIM for his courage! #fightback.”
However, the president of the women’s GOP group Nancy Kormanik said that she was not formally invited, and that Malkin brought her as a guest.
The topic of the event was safety and self-defense, and Malkin was a guest speaker and had an interview with Wendy prior.
The event came a day before her son’s first court appearance in Lake County, Illinois, where the decision whether or not he will be extradited to Wisconsin will be made.
Rittenhouse is facing multiple charges that include first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide, recklessly endangering safety and possession of a dangerous weapon.
His attorneys argued that Rittenhouse acted in self-defense, and hailed him a courageous patriot who was exercising his right to bear arms during a night of protests.
They are fighting for Rittenhouse’s return to Wisconsin, as the charges he faces may put him in prison for life.
The judge, Paul Novak, gave the defense 14 days to review papers and file pleadings before the October 9 hearing.
“I can tell you just very distinctly that we intend to challenge extradition by writ of habeas corpus,” said Pierce in an interview.
