Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s highly anticipated interview with Oprah, which would air on Sunday, would describe the backstory and effects of the couple’s split from royal life.
The upcoming interview two-hour special will be an opportunity for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to explain why they decided to leave Britain and moved to California to start new lives.
“I’m ready to talk,” Meghan said in an excerpt shown on Friday and expressed how “liberating” it is to be able at the interview.
The excerpts released ahead of the interview also gave insights into what the couple really felt about royal life.
“I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there was an active role that the firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us,” Meghan said.
“And if that comes with risk of losing things, I mean, there’s been a lot that’s been lost already.”
“As an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is um.. different than I think what people imagine it to be, it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say yes,” she added.
In another instance, Harry remembered his late mother, Princess Diana, who found her way alone after her controversial divorce from Prince Charles.
“I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side, because I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” Harry said, describing how “it’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us.”
Royal interviews are considered rare, and such previous televised sessions have been considered problematic.
In 2019, Prince Andrew’s interview about his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein led to his own departure from his royal duties after failing to show sincere empathy for the victims.
