An eight-year-old girl was shot and killed Saturday night during a backyard birthday party for a teenager at a home in Ohio.
Authorities identified the victim as Mikayla Pickett, a student at Portage Path Community Learning Center. according to the spokesperson for Akron Public Schools.
According to the Akron Police Department, several shots were fired at a home on Roselle Avenue, between East Avenue and Manchester Road in the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood at about 11:45pm Friday.
Pickett was found shot in the back after the shooting, and was rushed to Akron Children’s Hospital where she succumbed to her wound and passed away.
Willie Walker, 62, said he was hosting an outdoor birthday party for his 15-year-old grandson in his backyard, when about three or four people showed up and began shooting at family members and friends who were at the party.
Walker, who has been a resident in the area for 32 years, was inside when the gunfire started.
“All hell broke out,” Walker said, “I don’t know what the hell happened.”
“I don’t know know how many shells they took,” he added, “A lot of them.”
One of the neighbors said that that a couple of windows were shot out at the home of her son, who lives just next door.
The medical examiner’s office of the Summit County plans to perform an autopsy on the child.
Detectives are still investigating the incident, and have not made any arrests as of Sunday morning.
However, they are hoping that someone will come forward with information about the shooting.
“You don’t have to be impacted directly by the violence to care about what happened,” pleads Lt. Michael Miller.
“There’s a line. And the line is drawn around the sanctity and the purity of children. This was an 8-year-old. We need someone who knows something to please say something.”
Pickett’s death is the sixth homicide that was under the age of 19 that the police are investigating this year.
