A gay couple from Canada was recently handcuffed and arrested by the police after they were found kissing on the beach.
According to media reports, cops in Mexico arrested two Canadian nationals for engaging in public displays of affection on Tulum beach. The couple was found allegedly kissing on Sunday and before they knew it, cops arrived at the scene to handcuff and arrest them.
Right after the incident took place, those present in the nearby vicinity began gathering and shouting slogans against the officials as they felt their actions were unjust. The fact that the gay couple was kissing wasn’t such a big deal and many thought it was wrong of authorities to punish them in the first place.
The Quintano Roo Tulum police defended their actions by mentioning how they had received numerous complaints from locals about how the couple was busy engaging in obscene behavior on Sunday. According to them, people complained about the couple’s vulgar sexual acts.’ Therefore, they had no option but to take them away.
As the law enforcement officials forced the men into their vehicle, a massive crowd of beachgoers came to the rescue. Furious as ever, they demanded the cops to release the men immediately as what the cops were doing was totally uncalled for and unjustified.
Soon, video footage of the incident also began going viral, which was recorded by one local women’s rights activist named Maritza Escalante.
The men also began arguing with the officials as they attempt to step into their vehicle.
“Our problem is that we are gay and we were kissing,” one of the men adds. “We are gay,” he again repeats.Thankfully, the crowd’s efforts proved fruitful in the end as the cops released the men with a warning after being pressured by the beachgoers.
When questioned by the media, the police department mentioned how it always supported the idea of inclusivity and is impartial to both tourists as well as residents.
However, they also added how the abuse of the authorities will never be tolerated.
