Social media giant, Facebook, is all set to go ahead with their ban against all forms of racist blackface posts and images that depict racial stereotypes.
In the recent few days, there was an increase in all forms of hate speech, published across numerous posts on its site.
Facebook made a huge announcement yesterday while explaining how it planned on introducing the new restrictions for users around the globe. Moreover, the ban will include caricatures that deface black people as well as various dehumanizing images, relating to Jewish people.
The recent decision came in light during a time when the social media giant made another shocking statement. This was related to how coronavirus was responsible for a huge drop in both suicides as well as self-injury posts that it claims to remove during the recent months.
This new ban will significantly hit places like Europe, where numerous images relating to Black Pete, will be taken down. The famous Dutch character is just one example of the many images that need removal. Similarly, other common examples of images to face the ax include English Morris dancers.
The breaking news caused a huge stir in places like the Netherlands where images of Black Pete are a common sight to see.
On most occasions, it was observed how numerous white individuals donned blackface makeup looks, combined with red lipstick, and curly wigs.
All the efforts aim to portray Black Pete at street parties while honoring Sinterklaas.
On the other hand, the character was the center of great debate from various oppositions who term his image as a ‘racist caricature.’ However, Dutch supporters claim that he’s an important part of various Dutch traditions, as their defense.
For this reason, numerous towns, areas, and whole cities have literally ‘phased out’ everything relating to blackface in street parties.
One organization went as far as claiming how August 11th is a Happy Day in the Netherlands because Black Pete won’t be a part of both Facebook as well as Instagram.
