Elliot Page had a sit down with the queen of talk herself, Oprah Winfrey, and revealed that he finally felt comfortable with his own body following his body transition.
Page, 34, said that his decision to come out publicly as transgender is “imperative,” especially that his announcement came at a time when the community feels under attack.
He first announced his transition on social media in December last year.
In a trailer for The Oprah Conversation interview, the actor described his “duty” to go public.
“I was expressing this to people in my life much before posting that letter and telling people for the first time and knowing I wanted a moment to become comfortable in myself and to be able to get to that point,” Page said.point 405 |
“For me, in this time we’re in right now and especially with this horrible backlash we’re seeing towards trans people, particularly trans youth, it really felt imperative to do so.point 169 | ”point 176 | 1
Page made a reference to the laws in some states in the US that currently restrict the access of certain medical treatments for transgender youth, including laws that stops young trans people to participate in sports.
Page, who is best known for an Oscar-nominated role in 2007 coming-of-age drama Juno, told Oprah that it was crucial and important to publicly come out as trans.
When Oprah asked what part of Page’s transition had brought him the most joy, he replied: “Getting out of the shower and the towel’s around your waist and you’re looking at yourself in the mirror and you’re just like, ‘there I am’,” he said.
“And I’m not having the moment where I’m panicked, I’m not having all these little moments that used to be.”
“Just being in a T-shirt,” Page said. “It’s being able to touch my chest and feel comfortable in my body for the, probably the first time. Tears of joy.”
In a recent interview, the actor described how he felt his transition has helped him in his acting career. His team told Time Magazine that they were “seeing more activity than they have in years” in terms of his job offers.
