Blood Plasma of Recovered Patients Could Give Immunity to Covid-19 Patients


Five critically infected patients tested negative 12 days after receiving treatment which used blood donated by recovered patients.

According to a report, three of the patients were discharged from the hospital while the other two are in stable condition.

The treatment is called Convalescent plasma – a type of therapy that has been used to treat infections for decades.

Convalescent plasma was used to improve the survival rate of critically afflicted SARS patients, when other treatments proved to be futile.

The blood plasma obtained from patients who recovered from the virus contained antibodies that are naturally developed by their immune systems to fight the virus.

Scientists are hoping that this method could help cure patients, as the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital published a medical paper documenting the treatment process of the said five patients.

The hospital also reported that four of the five patients’ body temperatures returned to normal within three days after receiving treatment.

Liu Yingxia, deputy director of the hospital said, “We first started using recovered patients’ blood plasma to treat our critically ill patients on January 30.”

“We hope sharing our research could provide first-hand clinical experience for international medical workers and bring hopes to more coronavirus patients.”

The treatment has been widely used in hospitals in China, and is believe to be one of the key factors as to how they flattened the curve.

While scientists around the world race towards developing a cure, it is believed that this method is by far, the best hope in winning the fight against COVID-19 and shield those most vulnerable.

Dr. Mike Ryan, head of WHO’s health emergencies program said in an interview that the therapy has been proven effective against several infectious disease such as rabies and diphtheria.

However, it is not proven effective in every disease the therapy has been introduced to.
