Democratic Congressman, Emanuel Cleaver, received severe criticism for ending his opening prayer recently.
The Democrat says he was appalled by the great negativity that surrounded the ending of his opening prayer. Moreover, Twitter couldn’t handle how Cleaver used the term ‘awoman’ alongside amen.
Meanwhile, conservative critics such as Donald Trump Jr. objected to the message, turning Twitter into a battleground for massive debate and backlash.
On the other hand, the Congressman mentioned how those who criticized him were ‘soiled by selfishness, perverted by prejudice, and inveigled by ideology.’ Clearly, this wasn’t the reaction he anticipated.
Emanuel Cleaver is a minister for the United Methodist as well as the ex-mayor for Kansas City in Missouri. He is currently beginning his 9th term. Cleaver went on defending his use of the term by explaining how his ‘A-woman’ reference intended to recognize the great number of females serving the new Congress.
Currently, there are a total of 144 women serving in both the Senate as well as the House. This is greater than the previous record-breaking high of 129.
However, his justification didn’t stop the whirlwind of criticism that came from conservatives across the board. They accused him of misunderstanding the true meaning of amen, which is a Hebrew term that refers to ‘so be it.’
Trump Jr. commented on how the term isn’t a ‘gendered word’ but that didn’t stop them from being insane. In the same way, he ridiculed the minister further by asking the public, “Is this what you voted for?”
Cleaver defended his stance on Twitter, where he concluded by saying that it was just a ‘lighthearted’ pun in recognition of the great number of women serving the Congress. In the same way, he mentioned how he finds these historic occasions as blessings from God, and he’s truly very grateful for it.
