The Australian state of Victoria is getting plenty of attention after passing the world-leading bill that bans gay conversion therapy.
According to media reports, this law is being called out as one of the toughest conversion therapy regulations in the world. Therefore, the ban mentions how the practice is nullified in all settings and sectors.
Victoria contains the popular and second-largest city of the country, Melbourne. News outlets confirmed how the bill came about after a 12-hour long debate and is commonly being termed as the Change or the Suppression Practices Prohibition Bill.
Those members in support of the world-leading bill mentioned how the new act will work positively towards banning the effects of gay conversion therapy in all settings. This includes healthcare, alongside religious institutions. Meanwhile, critics termed the act as the gold standard reply towards the dangerous practice.
In the same way, the country’s leading LGBTQ+ Charity, Just Equal urged the country’s other territories and cities to follow in their footsteps and propose a similar decision.
News reports confirmed how Victoria is not the country’s first state to pass a law that bans conversion therapy. However, it is the first state to explicitly put a ban in religious settings. And that is where most activists claim that it is used the most. But what exactly does the new law entail is a question on many people’s minds.
Well, authorities mentioned how it officially claims to outlaw or ban the effects of carrying out any religious practice. This includes prayer related practices, gender identity, exorcism in regards to changing a person, and altering a person’s sexual orientation too. In addition, it clearly terms conversion therapy as the true form of domestic violence.
The new law will come into effect in about a year’s time. Also, anyone who is found guilty of trying to alter a person’s identity will thoroughly be penalized in the form of hefty fines or jail time that spans up to 10 years in prison.
