Millions Of Asthma Patients Including Britons Who Receive Flu Jab Should Distance Themselves In Order To Avoid Severe Coronavirus Illness


A top doctor has cautioned that millions of asthma patients and any Britons who get the flu jab on the NHS will slash socialization to avoid serious coronavirus disease.

The NHS considers adults with long-term conditions needed to receive a free flu jab every winter, including respiratory diseases.

People with asthma prepare for seasonal colds and flu each year, which can cause wheezing and coughing much worse. Asthma, a chronic long-term lung disease, can cause breathing difficulties and shortness of breath, which accounts for 9.8 million doctor visits.

Jonathan Van-Tam, England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, said the social distance recommendation was’ very good’ for certain high-risk classes.

This follows the guidance from the Governments that those at elevated risk of serious coronavirus disease ought to be especially vigilant in implementing the social distancing measures recently announced.

Britons wanted more clarification on who actually fall into that category, given health problems are so prevalent today.

People with asthma seem to be more prone to become critically sick if they get COVID-19. Yet they have no better chance of catching the virus than anybody else.

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists asthma, along with diabetes and heart disease, as conditions that make us “more prone to becoming seriously ill with the virus.” America’s Asthma and Allergy Foundation also lists asthma as a chronic medical condition that puts one more at risk, adding that asthmatics should “take care when transmitting some form of respiratory disease in their area.

Talking from Westminster, Professor Van-Tam said social constraints are especially applicable to all those who might get the flu jab, apart from kids.

He said, ‘ I don’t want to go into every single risk group in huge detail, but we’re saying that it’s the people who are offered flu vaccines, other than children, who fit into that risk category, people for whom the advice about social distancing is very strong.’

Around six per cent of COVID-19 patients who also had a chronic respiratory condition died, according to a study in China.

The study also found that 10 percent of patients with heart disease did not survive by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in 72,314 COVID-19 patients.

Anyone with severe asthma that is difficult to treat will be approached for advice from March 23, according to Asthma UK. The Government is however encouraged to report just what health conditions the 53 deaths from coronavirus in the UK had before they died.

There are currently about 2,000 recorded cases in the UK. Nevertheless, in fact this figure is probably much higher.
