A fashion competition in New York features beautifully designed bridal dresses—made out of toilet paper.
While expensive weddings are the norm, Cheap-Chic Weddings is a platform that challenges this idea, the group teaches people how to save money on weddings.
In 2005, the people behind Cheap-Chic Weddings started the Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest and has been ongoing for 14 years.
The fashion designers who will join the competition have to make a bridal dress that can be worn on an actual wedding day, but here’s the catch—they can only make it using toilet paper as the fabric, glue, and water.
In 2018, 1,500 dressmakers entered the competition and six judges chose the best ten bridal gowns to compete for the final round in New York. The criteria for judging include beauty, creativity, and how well the gowns are made.
The last round was held at Kleinfeld Bridal —a wedding dress store in New York.
Some people said that at first glance, it was difficult to pinpoint which dress is made with toilet paper, and which is the wedding gown sold by Kleinfeld Bridal.
Participants who had won the dress competition in the past really do make clothes for a living, but there are some instances that contest winners are not really fashion designers. Some are cheerleaders, actress, and a florist.
Cheap-Chic Weddings has been facilitating this contest for over a decade, but so far, only 1 dress has been worn in an actual wedding ceremony.
