The new sign at George Floyd Square isn’t going down too well with White people and the reason is obvious.
Local media outlets spoke about the controversial sign that was situated near the entrance of Minneapolis’s George Floyd Square. Therefore, it includes a set of specific instructions that are aimed directly at white people in particular.
To be more specific, the sign goes on to add, ‘Decenter yourself’ and then it says, ‘Contribute to the energy rather than draining it.’
In the same way, the sign also went on instructing white people to stop taking photographs of other individuals without their consent. Therefore, as you can imagine, Twitter users were absolutely divided regarding the sign with many referring to it as discriminatory too.
On the other hand, quite a few spoke about how it was actually appropriate since it was George Floyd Square and hence many claimed it to be a sacred space where such rules could be justified.
Reports confirmed how the square is actually a makeshift memorial that is reserved for a 46-year-old Black man that died in custody. The news regarding the memorial comes after Derek Chauvin, the former cop from Minneapolis, was termed guilty on all counts of murdering Floyd.
All of the set of instructions were put upon a placard and then put near the southern barricade, which was a checkpoint set up by the cops at the intersection between Chicago Avenue and 38th Street.
The residents of that particular area shut down all the traffic that led to and from the particular square, causing complaints from a series of businesses as well as local residents who spoke to the authorities about how it was not accessible to the cops.
In addition, some reports suggested how there was also a recent surge in the crime rate for that area in particular as well.
