The art group behind Lil Nas X’s ‘Satan Shoes’ revealed whose blood was used to create the sneakers.
Last week, Lil Nas X faced fiery backlash from conservatives and Nike after releasing his Satan-themed Nike Air Max 97s.
Nike filed a lawsuit and accused Brooklyn-based art group, MSCHF —the creators of the controversial sneakers— of copyright infringement for using its product.
Apart from its Satanic theme, the shoes attracted so much attention for having a real drop of human blood on their mid-soles.
Controversy aside, a lot of Lil Nas X’s fans have wanting to get their hands on the sneakers, with only 666 pairs made. But the real question is, whose blood was put in the ‘Satan Shoes?’
Daniel Greenberg, a co-founder of MSCHF, revealed how their group created the shoes and whose blood exactly it belongs to.
Greenberg revealed in an interview with Complex that the blood belongs to employees from MSCHF itself.
MSCHF works on projects designed to go viral, and the shoes were no different. The group’s dedication to the goal quickly paid off, as the sneakers went immediately viral after their release.
Regarding the creative process, Greenberg did not reveal the creative process behind it and did not tell exactly how the blood was collected.
Greenberg also said that the employees did not have the most pleasant experience when the blood is extracted, but remained cryptic as he said it was not done ‘in the best way, to say the least’.
“I could tell you; it’s just kind of graphic,” Greenberg said. “But, like, not by any means a good way of doing it.”
Greenberg added that there is not a lot of blood in the soles of the shoes, insisting it is ‘basically a drop, it’s a tiny, tiny bit in each sole’ and admitting that attempting to sell blood in greater quantities might cause an issue.
Greenberg said MSCHF is ‘prepared for people to be upset with it’, but that backlash is ‘not something that we predominantly mind’.
“We say a lot internally, we’re OK being loved or hated, we just don’t want apathy,” he said.
The ‘Satan Shoes’ is individually numbered, and are priced at $1,018, referencing Luke 10:18 that reads: “He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
