Gavin Newsom faces mounting pressure as he has to appoint a replacement for Kamala Harris’ Senate seat.
People want Newsom to continue the tradition and appoint a black woman to fill Kamala Harris’s seat in the US senate. Kamala Harris is selected as the Vice-President of Joe Biden, and the inauguration ceremony is due in almost one month.
A group of 150 women from “LA Women’s Collective” and “Election Women Bay Area” signed a letter that demands selecting a woman of color for the Vice President-elect’s seat. The letter occupied a whole page of “Los Angeles Times” and “San Franciso Chronicles” on Monday, November 24.
“Senate is the largest governing body of the nation; black women should get a chance to speak there.
The electoral progress in the USA accelerates by the dedication and struggle of women of color.
We are fortunate enough to have diligent black women ready to serve. We look forward to you selecting someone from them as the replacement of Kamala Harris,” the letter reads.Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Franciso and the guy who dated Kamala Harris in 1990, also started a similar campaign. “Kamala Harris was the second black woman ever in the US senate. We don’t expect Gavin Newsom to appoint someone other than a woman of color to Harris’ seat” he said. Brown proposed Karen Bass, Barbara Lee, Holly Mitchell, and Maxine Waters as options for the new candidate.
“I am planning to organize a team including the members of the fraternal organization, black press statewide, pastors, black churches, and civil leaders to pressurize the government toward one of their leading choices,” said Willie Brown.
However, the rumors circulating on the internet suggest that Newsom is considering Alex Padilla as the new senator.
If the news comes true, then Alex Padilla would be the first Latino to get the honor of representing California in the US senate.Being a Hispanic male and close ally of the governor, Padilla will turn things up for Newsom for the upcoming elections, if chosen.
