President Joe Biden said he will replace the entire federal fleet of 645,000 cars and trucks with American-made electric vehicles.
He also pledged that the new electric vehicles will be made in the United States as his administration takes steps to embrace clean energy.
Biden said the electrification of the federal fleet would create a million jobs for Americans in the clean energy and auto fields but he did not give a timeline or a price tag for the replacement.
“The federal government also owns an enormous fleet of vehicles, which we’re going to replace with clean electric vehicles – made right here in America made by American workers,” Biden said as he signed the “Made in America” executive order.
According to Reuters’ calculations, the replacement of the federal fleet could cost $20 billion or more.
The White House did not immediately give answers as to when the current vehicles will be replaced and if the replacement includes The Best fleet of fortified Cadillac limousines.
The US government owns around 645,000 vehicles, the 2019 General Services Administration reports, with over 170,000 of those belonging to military agencies and more than 225,000 of those belonging to the Postal Service.
Only 4,475 of the total vehicles owned by the federal government are electric vehicles.
The President’s “Made in America” executive order aims to increase the amount of federal spending that goes to companies in America. It also closes loopholes that let foreign products be bought.
“As this pandemic has made clear, we can never again rely on a foreign country that doesn’t share our interest to protect our people in a national emergency,” he said.
