US House of Representatives passed the ‘Equality Act’, paving the way to end discrimination against trans and gay communities.
The historic reform comprises a bill that extends civil rights protections that eliminates discrimination relating to gender identity as well as sexual orientation.
According to media reports, the historic reform was initially passed by the House back in the year 2019, when it was led by the Democratic party. Now, the new bill will reportedly undergo a series of challenges at the Senate, where it is subject to face numerous opposition from the Republican party.
Local news outlets confirmed how the Gay and Transgender Equality Act was majorly passed along the lines of the ruling party with great support from all Democrats as well as having only 3 Republicans as representatives favoring the decision.
According to the NPR, the current president of the US, Joe Biden, promised to move forward with the act, as a part of his election campaign trail. He added how this bill would be a major part of his top priorities, as he completes the first 100 days in his office. And clearly, it appears that Biden has stayed true to his promise.
Right after the reform was introduced through the House Democrats, President Biden again declared his thorough support on the matter with the following public statement:
“I urge the Congress Body to quickly move forward and pass this historic legislation.” The president also exclaimed how every single person deserved the right of being treated with dignity as well as respect and that this reform did just that. “The bill ensures that all lives of Americans are up to the values of equality as well as freedom for all,” the president added.
While the act has immense support from the Democrats, it continues to receive opposition from the Republican party. Hence, it will be interesting to see what they claim when it reaches the Senate.
