A 53-year-old man who was arrested at the Capitol riot last week took his own life, police confirmed.
Christopher Stanton Georgia shot himself at his Alpharetta home on Saturday. He was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner.
His wife called 911 on Saturday morning and told officers that there was ‘blood everywhere,’ the Daily Mail reported.
Police said in a report that the family members were ‘extremely distressed.’ Two semi-automatic SKS rifles were removed from Georgia’s home.
Documents from the Superior Court of DC show that the 53-year-old had been charged with attempting to “enter certain property, that is, the United States Capitol Grounds, against the will of the United States Capitol Police.”
Georgia was among a group outside at around 7:15 pm last Wednesday.
Documents reveal that Georgia and his group refused to leave when officers gave them warnings to disperse.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 180 days in prison and up to $1,000 fines.
Five people died during the riot in the US Capitol. One protester was shot dead as she tried to climb through a window.
Three others died from medical emergencies, and one police officer passed away ‘from injuries sustained.’
Officer Brian Sicknick, 42, was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher while responding to the attack.
One officer said he was beaten by insurgents while another said he was called the N-word more than ten times.
Both of them said they saw law enforcement officials in the riot.
Police departments across the country, including California, Washington State, Texas, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire, have now opened investigations into whether any of their officers took part in the protest.
