The activist who leads the “Justice for Breonna Taylor” protest has been gunshot on Monday.
The incident took place at around 12:30 am on Monday near the Louisville campus. He was taken to the nearby hospital immediately, where he was pronounced dead. According to the police’s information, the murder has nothing to do with the victim’s association with racial demonstrations.
Black Lives Matter’s supporters mourned his death and put up memorials for him all over the city. The mother of the deceased activist, Christine Muineach, confirmed the death on Monday by posting a message on her social media account. “My beautiful and intelligent son has been killed in a carjacking,” she wrote.
Sarah Nagdy, the sister of the victim, wrote, “He was an avid activist for Black Lives Matter and an inspirational leader.
” Sarah started an online fundraiser for her brother, which crossed $30000 in two days. The amount was more than enough to cover the funeral costs. She told the reporters that Travis grew up in foster homes. He was a screwed up child before he joined hands with the protest movement for Taylor.
Taylor was a victim of police murder; she was a black woman shot dead by police during a drug raid on her home. No drugs were found at her place, according to the sources.
Several cases of police murder are reported since March, which provoked the black community to start racial demonstrations.
Travis was an influential member of such campaigns; he was often seen leading the chants and marches supporting Black Lives Matter. Hundreds of people gathered at Jefferson Square wearing shirts of his name. They carried posters, sang his name, and chanted his favorite slogans.
“I hope his efforts bring a change, and the violence ends with Travis. No one can take his place. He always believed that he’d bring change in the society regarding racial injustice,” said a friend of Travis.
LMPD’s homicide unit is investigating the murder – No arrest has yet been made.
