A devastated neighbor stood up and told the story about the terrifying moment when she saw a mother and her newborn baby covered in blood after the family’s dog attacked the infant.
A two years old Rottweiler attacked the baby at home in New Zealand, who was just born hours before, on Sunday.
The infant was taken to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries but unfortunately died overnight.
Karen, who didn’t wish to use her last name – lives in the Hamilton suburb of Enderley on New Zealand’s North Island – was one of the first persons who saw the scene after the horrifying attack.
She said she will be haunted forever by what she saw.
She assumed that her neighbor’s dog escaped from their property again. When she came closer to the brutal scene, she saw the mother sitting on the grass holding her blood-covered infant in her arms.
Karen said the family’s dog must have been grabbed the baby while the mother was using the toilet. She continued, the dog might have attempted to bury the baby because he was covered in dirt.
The dog escaped from the scene as they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
The neighbor family already had another dog; the Rottweiler was a new addition to the family.
As Karen mentioned before, the dog escaped from the property, but before this attack, she had helped return the dog earlier.
Throughout the time she was returning the dog, she had met the newborn baby. The baby meant the world to the mother, she added. The new mum proudly showed the infant to her.
The Rottweiler was captured and secured by the Hamilton City Council animal control facility.
Susan Stanford, manager at the Hamilton City Council animal control, said that the decision about the dog had not yet been decided.
Further information regarding the Rottweiler will be announced by the ongoing police investigation.
