The Italian luxury brand Gucci added a £1,700 orange check frock in their men wear collection.
The £1,700 orange frock is a Tartan cotton long smock shirt with pearl buttons, satin bow detailing, and a Peter Pan collar. The frock is inspired by the grunge looks from the ‘90s.
The 32-year-old Presenter Simon Thompson, who is from Southampton, puts on the replica from ASOS and wander around the city to see the reactions of the people.
He said that he was surprised to see the dress made for a man, as it looked like a woman’s dress because of the way it was clinched at the waist and the deep cut of the shoulders and the check pattern.
Thompson said that male and female bodies are totally different, and this is a shame that the designer didn’t care about that because, just like women, men’s sizes also vary. He said that the dress did not fit him at all, and the chest looked absurdly broad.
He said that at first, he thought nobody is watching him, then he thought the people might have assumed I was dressed up for Oktoberfest, but after a while, people start showing reactions.
While walking past Japan House, he was stopped by the security guard who started talking with him and said that the dress is fabulous and he has not seen anything like this before. He was interested to know about the dress.
He said that he was quite amused to get the reactions from the builders when he walked past them, one builder said ‘Yo, he’s wearing a dress!’ and another shout, ‘You can’t wear that!’
According to the volunteer, the most interesting conversation he had was with the lady who was looking at him and asked why is he wearing a dress? To which he replied that he is advertising the menswear from Gucci, but she conflated two things and assumed any man in women’s clothing must be gay.
He said if the frock was tailored properly and if he liked it, he’d probably wear it because Muslim men wear long tunics called thawbs- which looks like a dress, and Scottish men wear kilts.
But he said that he didn’t like the dress, didn’t like the pattern nor the cut on the shoulders and the dress made him look like he is not comfortable, which is a shame.
