On Monday, Our Lady of the Valley Retirement Community started a goal of 106 cards for 106 years of life for Venus Tucker, a resident who’s turning 106 years on August 13.

Tucker is the oldest resident at the Roanoke, Virginia, retirement community, and the facility had to fall back to celebrating this way since the coronavirus pandemic has forced gatherings to a minimum.

“We got 241 cards as of today, and we’ve already exceeded our goal,” community administrator Jackie Holton said in a CNN report. “We are hoping for 1,006 at this point.”

Tucker, from Roanoke, Alabama was born on August 13, 1914, and has seen over a century’s worth of events unfold. The year of her birth alone was significant, marking the start of World War I and Babe Ruth’s major league debut.

Throughout her life, Tucker explored a variety of careers eventually marrying her husband Wesley who has since passed away.

In a statement provided by the retirement home,  Tucker said that she ‘doesn’t understand why [she] has been allowed to reach 106 years old’

“I am blessed and moved by God and the Holy Spirit for keeping me here for so many years,” Tucker said.

As the company’s oldest resident, there will be a little celebration for her birthday. Fried chicken is one of her simple pleasures, which will be the main dish served for her birthday. The cake will be served, and of course, her cards will be presented as part of the “card party.”

“They’re coming in from all over, so it really has been an amazing experience,” Holton said.

The celebration will be limited, only consisting of staff and residents — and likely outside to accommodate social distancing, Holton said.

Holton added that by the time Tucker finishes reading all the cards, she’ll be 107.
