In the most unfortunate series of events, an Air India flight from Dubai crash-landed in Kerala, killing 5 onboard, while injuring several more.
The aircraft crashed in poor weather and severe rain, despite aborting one attempt at landing at its desired destination.
Reported images were circulated on social media, showcasing how the airline broke into two parts, while lying near a valley in the Calicut Airport district of Kerala.
Early police reports suggested how both pilots were killed in the incident, leaving many to fear for their missing loved ones. Other reports showed that more than 35 passengers were injured during the crash.
An Indian minister for the Kerala state spoke to Reuters, confirming the crash and that five people were indeed killed in the mishap. These figures were cited from the Police.
The minister, A.C. Moideen explained how he was on his way to the exact site of the crash after he was requested to lead all the rescue and relief efforts.
Another Indian congressperson, Shashi Tharoor also confirmed that both pilots were killed during the attempted crash landing. Similarly, NDTV reported how 30 to 45 people were indeed hospitalized. At the same time, state tv also reported that all other passengers were safely evacuated from the airline.
A leading government official claimed that the Calicut airport’s runway is situated on a rather steep hilltop position, making landing very difficult. He also explained how deep gorges were present on both sides of the runway, further worsening the matter.
He went on to explain how the unfortunate incident occurred due to poor weather and poor visibility condition, amid heavy rains.
With ten infants on board the aircraft, heartwrenching images continue to be circulated while investigations regarding the crash continue.
