A COVID-19 survivor is going viral after his miraculous defeat from the novel virus.

The California man spent a staggering 31-day ventilator stay while having most of his fingers amputated. To be exact, his hospital day rounded up to 64 days in total.

The senior citizen resident from California says that’s he’s lucky to be alive. At the same time, he explains how he spent a staggering two months at the hospital. Let’s not forget his horrifying moments when doctors explained that he would lose most of his fingers through amputation.

54 year old, Gregg Garfield, resides in Studio City. He explains how he fell sick, after an adventurous skiing trip with his friend’s group to Northern Italy, last February.

The COVID-19 survivor also mentioned how his condition deteriorated over time, becoming worse and worse. Soon, it reached a point when he had no choice but to get admitted to the hospital. This was closely followed by intubation too.

Dubbed popularly as ‘Patient Zero,’ he explains how doctors and other medical staff told him about his 1 percent shot at survival. But despite all odds, he proved everyone wrong.

However, his journey towards recovery wasn’t as easy as it may seem. It was a long and enduring battle that included a 31-day ventilator stay, followed by 64 days at the hospital. But on the last day, he walked out bravely and went home.

With that said, Garfield suffered immense tissue as well as muscle loss. And this made most of his fingers necrotic. The end result was a nightmare. And that’s when the surgeon described how he would have most of his fingers amputated.

According to sources, the 54-year-old explained how he wanted other similar people to know that his condition wasn’t just a fluke. It was harrowing to say the least. And it would be wrong to term it as a near-death episode. Likewise, he wants others to know that if it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone.

Some of his common symptoms for the novel Coronavirus included low-grade fever, followed by immense fatigue, and severe cough. Garfield also mentioned how he thought that he was infected with the common flu.

Around that time, he was still in Italy and the pandemic was on the rise. While the number of cases in the US was only 15, it was soaring at peaks in Italy.

In the end, all 13 members from the Italian ski trip ended up getting the virus. And that just goes to show its seriousness.
