Bill de Blasio cancels all the major events and gatherings in the city amidst Coronavirus threats till September 30th.
He believes the city should prioritize public places for people who want to enjoy fresh air keeping the social distance measures.
This means the West Indian Day Parade and the Feast of San Gennaro will also not be celebrated this year. The decision came following the public flocking towards Coney Island, newly reopened beaches.
The Black Lives Matter protests, nonetheless, will not be affected because of this new restriction as the mayor thinks these ‘historic’ demonstrations should go on.
The NY city has become a hub for the BLM protesters from the past six weeks where people from all strata of life get together to demand justice against the racial discrimination people of color face every day.
Bill de Blasio took this opportunity to share his grief with the people of New York saying imposing such restrictions pains him but we have to make the most of public places accessible for public use in such times of crisis as the whole nation is tired of the lockdown and needs fresh air.
The city is witnessing the reopening of major public places recently.
The ban includes any kind of activity in public streets and restaurants. The critics, on the contrary, are not happy with this decision as they believe if the BLM protests can be permitted, other gatherings should be too. There has been a mixed response to it as people are sharing their sentiments on social media over this.
Though the majority of NY residents agree to the decision saying such kind of measures are necessary to stop the coronavirus from spreading but they’re equally sad on how they will miss their favorite public events this year.
