A three-year-old boy died on Friday after accidentally shooting himself in the head inside his home in Oregon.
According to Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic incident happened just before 10:00 pm.
Family members of James Kenneth Lindquester called 911 after finding the toddler, and saw that he had found an unsecured handgun supposedly hidden away in an end table inside a bedroom.
Emergency responders took over as soon as they arrived, and did their best to try save James.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, but he was unresponsive upon arrival and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
He was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.
The boy’s parents declined to speak when approached by the media, and chose to keep the matter private.
According to the police, the boy’s father, the father’s girlfriend, and another child were at home but the boy was alone in the bedroom when the gun went off.
Authorities are investigating the unfortunately incident, and no charges have been filed.
Deputies said that the District Attorney will make the decision as to whether will be issued against the family.
Oregon State Medical Examiner had conducted an autopsy on Saturday, but the findings had not yet been released to the public.
“I think if you ask any first responder, the death of a child is the absolute worst call that we go to,” said Washington County Deputy Shannon Wilde.
“It’s tough, a lot of us are parents ourselves. I know some of the responders on scene last night have children, some have children the same age as this little boy and it’s tough. We see a lot of horrible things but seeing a child in that situation is the worst.”
The sheriff’s office urged gun owners to keep their firearms locked up and stored away to prevent tragic accidents such as this from happening again.
